The Newark Board of Adjustment on Thursday granted Klondike Kate's a variance to build a retractable awning over its deck.

Owner Gianmarco Martuscelli said the awning will allow the Main Street restaurant to use its outdoor seating area during inclement weather.

“Ever since COVID, people want to sit outside,” Martuscelli told the board.

Right now, the restaurant doesn’t take reservations for its deck seating due to the unpredictability of the weather. That will change once the awning is installed.

“We've realized how much that will help us in the spring and summer and fall with people being able to eat outside and not worry about the elements,” Martuscelli said.

He uses a similar awning at his other restaurant, the Chesapeake Inn in Chesapeake City, Md. There, the awning is used when it rains and when it's sunny and then rolled up once the sun goes down.

City code stipulates that roofs and awnings over decks cannot be located within 8 feet of a street curb. Klondike Kate's awning will be 6 feet, 1 inch from the curb, requiring a variance, which the board granted.

Martuscelli said the awning probably won't be ready for use until the spring because the materials have to be ordered from Europe and will take up to two months to arrive.
