“It’s a new approach, said Community Affairs cop Victor Boamah about the precinct’s new “Meme” strategy, using popular internet jokes in an attempt to get people to lock their car doors.

“We are just trying different and creative ways to get our message to the community,” Officer Boamah told The Wave.

Starting on May 15, the precinct twitter account, run by community affairs officers, began periodically using memes featuring dogs, babies, and Kermit the Frog.

These included comedian Ken Jeong from the TV series Community yelling “Lock your doors!” and a rather strange looking meme of a baby asking, “Hey, your doors locked?”

The posts also give tips, like making sure windows are closed and keeping valuables out of plain sight.

“It’s a new approach,” said Community Affairs Officer Victor Boamah

Car break-ins, always a thorn in the side of the 100th, are down 27 percent in the last 28 days as opposed to the previous one, there have been five this month.

The 100th, as well as precincts around the city are working to crack down on the theft of catalytic converters, a part under the car that contains valuable minerals.

Cops hope the new strategy my reach people

Cops say that it only takes two to three minutes for a thief to chop off the metal part, and are specifically targeting Honda models from the early 2000s.

The precinct hopes this new “meme” approach can reach the community, their twitter has just shy of 10,000 followers, and get more people to lock their cars to help prevent more break-ins.

“We will see in the coming weeks if it is working,” said PO Boamah, “Hopefully it is.”
