The Osage County Senior Center and Osage County General Public Transportation hosted an “After Hours” mixer and open house Friday, July 29, 2022, which was open to the public and Chamber of Commerce members.

The senior center, at 604 Market St., Osage City, is a place to enjoy many activities throughout the week. Monday includes sewing, art and painting, exercise, Mexican train dominoes and pitch. Exercise and Mexican train dominoes take place on Tuesday. Wednesday includes sewing, exercise and Mexican train dominoes. Plan to exercise or do art and painting on Thursday. Finish up the week on Friday with exercise and bingo. Visit the center for the time slots for the activities.

A potluck lunch takes place on the first Wednesday of each month. Bring a covered dish and enjoy a nice variety of food and generally there is some musical entertainment following the meal.

The center has a variety of rooms specified for the various activities. There is a sewing room, ceramic and art and painting room, library and puzzle room, board room, pool and exercise equipment room. There is also a nice dining area which is used for daily meals served at lunch time.

The building is available for rent in the evenings and weekends when there are not center activities planned. The rental fees are $25 for nights and $50 per day for the weekends. Often during the day, there are activities or meetings that are scheduled. There is no charge and the center remains open for normal business. The center sponsors community blood drives through the Community Blood Center during the year. Also several times throughout the year, Herme Healthcare from Wichita provides foot and toenail care. There are also several fund raising events throughout the year to support the Senior Center activities. Memorial donations as well as donations from individuals and organizations are always welcomed to support the activities.

Osage County General Public Transportation provides riders the opportunity to use the public transportation for doctor appointments, eye appointments, medical procedures, hair appointments, physical therapy, mental health appointments, shopping, court appointments, and eating out.

If you need to go somewhere and need a ride, OCGPT will take you. Appointments must be made between 7:05 a.m. and 5 p.m. Fares are determined by destination from Osage City.

Jones Trust serves area communities with charitable grants

The Osage City Chamber of Commerce was fortunate to have Cheryl Mussatto, Osage County representative for Jones Trust, speak at the July 19, 2022, Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Mussatto talked about the background of the Jones Trust, established in 1961 by brothers Walter and Evan Jones, of Lebo, Kan., who were successful farmers and cattlemen. The Jones Trust provides grants for communities and their residents residing in Osage, Coffey, and Lyon counties. These grants awarded help support a broad array of charitable purposes in five areas: Arts, culture, and humanities; education; health; human services; and capacity building and infrastructure development.

Organizations that qualify to apply for grants include any 501c3 organization, including government entities. Grant applications are accepted four times a year and must be received no later than the 20th of March, June, September, or December to be considered.

Osage City Yard of the Month

The selection for the August Yard of the Month has taken place and the Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Chris and Jessi Kirkpatrick’s yard has been selected. Their home is located at 1309 Market St. Even with the extreme heat and lack of rain, they have maintained attractive landscaping including lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees surrounding their home and outbuilding.

Kirk and Cobb Inc. Realtors ribbon cutting and open house

Plan to attend the Kirk and Cobb Inc. Realtors open house and ribbon cutting, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, and meet Melissa Herdman, who recently moved into the building next door to Osage Hardware, which is owned by Colton and Danielle Hallgren.

The Osage City Chamber of Commerce are happy to welcome Melissa as the newest member of the Chamber as well as a new business in the downtown area. Please plan to attend the event and meet Melissa and welcome her to the business community.

Big top circus coming back to town – Sunday, Sept. 11

The Osage City Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that they will once again be hosting the Culpepper and Merriweather Big Top Circus Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, at Jones Park, north of the community building. There will be two shows at 2 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m.

The Culpepper and Merriweather Circus is known for producing quality, family entertainment, and specialize in animal acts of all types including horses, dogs, tigers, as well as first class acts of all kinds. Their show runs 90 minutes of good clean wholesome fun for everyone from 2 to 92 years old. The Culpepper and Merriweather Circus is one of the very few circuses still performing under a huge tent. They also are inviting the public to come out and watch the tent raising in the morning.

Advance ticket prices will be $12 for adults; $7 for children and seniors; day of circus prices will be $15 for adults; $8 for children and seniors. There will be no charge for children under two. Tickets may be purchased in advance at various locations, yet to be determined by the Chamber of Commerce.

Osage City fall citywide garage sales September 16-17, 2022

Osage City fall citywide garage sale time is just around the corner. Be sure to sign up to get on the map. This is a great opportunity to get rid of some of that “stuff” you never use and free up some space. The citywide garage sale is set for Sept. 16-17. To sign up, contact Tricia Gundy at 785-528-3301 or 785-219-9727. Tricia has revised the area map and is more user friendly, providing a chart for the type of items at the garage sales. She will need your name, as you want it listed on the map, address, a phone number in case of questions about the sale, if you are having the sale Friday and Saturday or Saturday only, what area you are on the map, type of items that you will be selling, for example: children clothing; adult clothing; furniture; collectibles; kitchen items; household items; craft items; miscellaneous and a $5 donation fee. Tricia is also working to make the map available per the Chamber of Commerce Facebook and website.

The proceeds go towards a scholarship awarded every year to two Osage City High School graduates that are furthering their education. The 2022 scholarships were awarded to Jerra Butterfield and Gavin DeBaun. The deadline for adding a sale to the garage sale map is 5 p.m. Sept. 14.

Everyone, be sure to mark your calendar to join in for a fun day kicking off the first day of October, preparing for the beginning stages of fall. The committee is busy working on organizing the event and information will soon be available. The committee is extending an invitation to bicyclists that often travel the trail and welcome them to Osage City to join in the festivities for the day and stay overnight. After a few years missing, plans are to bring the Beerfest back again. In addition to the Beerfest, there will be live music, food and some other forms of entertainment. Watch for flyers and social media for the final rundown of activities and schedule for the Fall Festival 2022.

Christmas on Market 2022: “Songs of Christmas” Nov. 12

Planning has begun for the annual Christmas on Market celebration, Nov. 12, 2022. Plan to shop local that weekend as many of our hometown businesses will be offering great opportunities for holiday gifts. The theme this year is Christmas on Market 2022: Songs of Christmas.

In addition to shopping, activities will be held throughout the day, including breakfast, lunch, visits with Santa, Jingle Bell Run 5K, in-store activities, chili cook-off, chili feed, gingerbread house building, craft show, raffle drawing, free poker run, bake sale, emergency services showcase, fire truck rides, ping pong drop, story time, bingo and the traditional lighted Christmas parade. Adam Burnett is in charge of organizing the parade and will be contacting organizations and businesses to participate in the parade.
